I am pleased that we can finally vote on the program we have developed. We have a timetable that we are satisfied with, that is not in line with the other agreements, but that works. No class-sized injuries, only mixed roles. We didn`t want to be with another mixed teacher at distance pls. The agreement attempts to address staff shortages by allowing schools to circumvent some of the rules set out in a previous agreement with the teachers` union. But it also brings a whole new set of complications. The other provisions of the agreement are similar and, in some cases, much more problematic: a principle in Queens, which asked not to use his name because he was not authorized to speak to the press, said that the late agreement made his job “1000 times more difficult. He said he relies on teachers who work with distant students to help with students arriving and firing, which now involves temperature checks and health screenings. Unfortunately, in recent weeks and months, this agreement and the agreements made have been profoundly flawed and do not solve the problems facing our communities. This is a predictable by-product of undemocratic decisions by our union leaders, who have made it clear that they are prepared to abandon virtually everything if it means that President Mulgrew can announce an agreement with this government. Some schools, for example, require students to learn on virtual platforms, even if they are in school buildings, or ask educators to teach a mix of students to distant people and students at different times of the day.
The initial agreement between the city and the union discouraged this and required separate teachers for those who are physically in school and those who learn from home. Now, contractors may have more flexibility. The only way to upset teachers is the UFT agreement. (There is no way to target those who have unsubscribed. Remember that the city is a short teacher and not all new employees are UFT members until they have completed all their papers – usually the first week or two of work.) But I think there`s something painful to come. Mulgrew can accept a two-week teacher furlough if schools close again for two weeks or even a month to save the city from financial disaster. Cuomo must really consider leaving deBlasio before doing even more damage. But the procedure for authorizing workarounds could take time if there is a disagreement between the principal and the teachers. The measures taken in this regard are described in a 12-piece memo and require that at least 55% of union members vote in support. If union members and administrators cannot reach an agreement, they can ask their superintendent and the school district representative for help in finding a solution. Excuse me, I`ll make my decision in June. That`s enough.
I am really happy for my colleagues, who may now be able to work remotely and help make their families safer, but I am also angry because the recent FTU agreement marginalizes all those who are single and healthy. It is as if the UFT has accepted that some of us deserve to be safer than others because we do not have certain types of relationships. If the building is not safe enough to be fully occupied (medical accommodations aside, then they are not safe enough for everyone, including children. Am I the only one who thinks so? The UFT again failed a significant portion of its constituents. What do others experience? Under the agreement, these housing units are only considered in schools that need to occupy more distance positions. Laughing out loud. Chalkbeat New York@ChalkbeatNY “I`m ready to quit,” a school principal said of the agreement between the city and the teachers` union Marilyn Ramirez, a chapter director and bilingual educator at the Lyceum for Media Communications in Washington Heights, on Friday with happy texts about the new agreement – including the ability to work from home, even if students are at home.
